Hard times are subjective, like some non-durable goods. A loss of income and a falling dollar on top of war worries and flat portfolios can be depressing. Do we stay depressed and worried, or do we have outlets to keep our spirits up? If we don’t have discretionary income, how do we entertain ourselves? If money weren’t an issue, then what sort of entertainment would we choose? Is it food or fun parks? Movies or murder novels? Do we jump into a bubble bath or hop on a plane?

The Sector Series: Non-Durable Consumer Goods

Let’s say we met a friend at the mall this past weekend to explore the racks for seasonal sales. Afterward, we saluted each other over a martini and a bit of broccoli quiche. Then we went home, took a shower, brushed our teeth, downed our prescription medicine, and cuddled up under that flannel blanket and quilt we bought last year at an online store. As we relaxed, we read a book with pages lit by a 75-watt soft light bulb.

The market surged on opening after the holidays. That was a big “duh.” Now, we’re facing the tail end of the post-holiday re-investment rally and we’re once again shrugging our shoulders. Where do we place our investment dollars, and how quickly do we need to act? Do we take the plunge and hope the water isn’t so cold it stops our hearts?
